Ricefield Origami

Aomori, Japan. Competition entry, Northern Style Housing, 2001

Come in.

You see streets, many doors, folded surfaces, rice fields...and the city.

Today in the age of compressed distances, we propose a housing complex with both
urban density and integrated landscape, a mélange of cities and nature, some
places prepared and polished, some remain from the years before and
folded into many stories.

Origami too can fold in and out, then they carry the folds even when
unfolded, you can keep them or throw them away.

If a house is made like an origami, folded from a square to the program necessary,
one side the city, the other side nature, the figure will contain both.

The depth of the shallow-planted, modern rice field is 8cm, rice ditches
are 36 cm. As thin as the layer of water, the floors will float over
the beams of the building origami. Rice planted in shallow water,
people living on field-like floors.

Aomori Bay and the city will appear, both in reflection and on the horizon.
Walk up the ramping street, besides the rice field, to your door.

Come in and be outside.
